At the beginning of the summer Wenger stated that getting another striker was “high” on his priority list as we were short on numbers up front. Even after signing Sanogo on a free it was clear that Arsenal would need another player in a position where they were forced to play Gervinho last summer.
Initially strongly linked to Jovetic and Higuain, Arsenal ended up missing on the Argentine Higuain as he joined Napoli after deciding against as Madrid upped the price and we eyed other targets. Whilst Arsenal have been linked with Rooney throughout the summer we were always seen as his second choice behind Chelsea so we decided to go after Suarez after hearing of a £40,000,000 plus release clause which led to the infamous £40,000,001 bid. However Liverpool stayed firm and Arsenal now have zero chance of signing him.
After admitting defeat on Suarez, Wenger turned his eye to Benzema and was supposedly lining up a £46 million bid before Benzema agent said his client would stay at Madrid, Madrid are interested in Suarez and if they went for Suarez would sell Benzema but with just 4 and a bit days left of the transfer window it would seem that there is not enough time for this to happen thus closing the door on that with Rooney also appearing to be staying now Arsenal seem to have run out of options.
Today we were linked with Fabio Quagliarella a decent striker in the past but he has been through a bad spell recently that has seen him usurped on the international scene by Balotelli. If Arsenal were to go after Quagliarella it would be a sign of desperation as his agent has been offering him to clubs all summer as Juventus see him as surplus to requirements and not good enough. One player who I don’t understand why Arsenal have not gone after is Burak Yilmaz of Galatasary, Lazio have agreed a £11 million deal for him but can’t stump up the money right now and are offering payment in installments whereas Galatasary want it upfront. Why not steal in and sign Yilmaz who scored 32 goals in 39 games last year including 8 in 9 Champions League appearances.
Other potential options would include:
-Benteke who despite signing a new contract did state at the end of last season he would love to play for Arsenal
-Torres been a few links throughout the summer but surely he would cost too much for what you would actually get
-Szalai bit of a right field option but have been linked with him in the past.
With Podolski out for 10 weeks we have lost another player who can play upfront, Walcott has had mixed performances as a CF and isn’t reliable as untested in that position. Some games he shows good movement and how his finishing has improved and others show how his hold-up play means he can never be a lone striker. An injury to Giroud would leave Arsenal struggling and they need a back-up but I struggle to see a suitable choice for our club.
In reality we should have got Higuain in and moved onto other targets in other positions but out of the players left assuming we can’t get Benzema I would have to say we should go for Yilmaz as we know he’s available and at least he has proven it in the Champions League.
