At the moment everyone is talking about Luis Gustavo and his potential move to Arsenal, this morning the German newspaper Bild broke that Gustavo had turned down Wolfsburg in search of a move to the Premier League but did not specify a club. This afternoon saw the outbreak on twitter of links of Gustavo to Arsenal and the situation continued changing this evening as numerous betting forms stopped taking bets on Gustavo’s next club.
Last week it was revealed there were 3 main runners for the Munich midfield signing and they were Arsenal, Chelsea and Wolfsburg. With Wolfsburg seemingly out the picture now this leaves Arsenal and Chelsea but with Chelsea pursuing Rooney and thinking they will get there man this has left the door open for Arsenal to sign the Brazilian international.
Munich have confirmed they are willing to let Gustavo go as this summer has seen a return to fitness of Kroos and the additions of Thiago from Barcelona as well as Gotze from Dortmund, adding this to an already crowded midfield including Schweinsteiger, Martinez and Muller it was always likely that someone would be forced out and it seems to be Gustavo.
Style of play:
He is a left footed defensive midfield player who despite being small of stature is a physical player not afraid to put his foot in, he usually plays as a DM or part of a pivot in the 4-2-3-1 formation for Brazil and/or Munich. Though he scored 4 goals in 22 appearances in the Bundesliga last year he is not known for his scoring prowess but his defensive attributes are great, Has the work rate, positioning and tackling required of a DM but also the passing range to fit into a side like Arsenal’s. At 26 he has a good level of staminia and more pace then Arteta.
I would be happy with his signing, he is proven in the Champions League and on the international scene and with Arteta turning 31 his legs may start to fail him and Gustavo can fit in nicely. Munich have a similar playing style to us of monopolising possession whilst taking advantage of counter attacking opportunities and also have a similar formation.
The fee would be in the region of £16 -18 million which is good value for a proven player.
