It is one of the worst kept secrets of this summer that Arsenal’s number 1 transfer priority is a striker. Before the end of the season Arsenal were heavily linked with Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic, just before the transfer window opened there were numerous reports on Arsenal’s chase for Gonzalo Higuain with scattered reports on Wayne Rooney and now the window has opened the attention seems to have switched to Luis Suarez.
However these avenues of interest seem to have either come to an end with the player joining another club or Arsenal are not in the prime position to sign the players as they will either not match the clubs valuation of the player or the player prefers another destination.
In the up and coming days Stevan Jovetic will join Manchester City for a fee in the region of £23-27 million once add ons have been included, Arsenal haven’t missed out on much here whilst this players talent is there for all to see he is quite clearly not worth that amount of money seeing as he had a paltry return of 13 goals in 34 games last season. Arsenal chase for Rooney has been reported for the last few weeks but it has always seemed we were more interested in Higuain and/or believed Manchester United would not sell. However Chelsea seem to be taking prime position in that race with Rooney reportedly preferring Chelsea as well as Chelsea opening the bidding today at £20 million. Expect that one to run for the next few weeks but Arsenal do not appear to be entering that race.
Next we come to Gonzalo Higuain, one of the most lethal finishers in Europe and an Argentina international. A player nearly every Arsenal fan would be happy with, two weeks away almost every day papers were saying we would complete his signing the next day however it never materialised. It now turns out that we agreed a deal with Madrid only for them to decide they wanted to keep Higuain unless we were willing to offer more money. Arsenal felt insulted so have cooled their interest watching Higuain to help force his way out of the club. However whilst we sat idle and switched our attention to Suarez, Napoli have registered interest and have made a £27 million bid. We have bid once for Suarez but Liverpool seem keen to not sell him especially to another Premier League club.
Napoli’s bid for Higuain is very bad news.
Why you ask, seeing as we have cooled our interest? Well the reason Madrid wouldn’t sell Higuain to us is that if they lose Higuain they want to replace him with a better striker, which in their eyes is Suarez but they know Suarez would cost £40 million plus. After buying Isco and Illarramendi for about £65 million and needing to offer Ronaldo a bumper contract they are in need of money. Hence why they asked for more money from us so they could afford Suarez. Know Napoli are offering this money and if Napoli get Higuain, Madrid can go after Suarez. It is no secret Suarez number 1 choice of destination is Madrid and Liverpool would be more likely to sell Suarez to an overseas club.
If these transfers did occur it would leave Arsenal high and dry bar potentially Burak Yilmaz, who I wrote an article on here. We registered an interest in Lewandowski but he is joining Bayern on a free at the end of his contract. There is a high potential of Arsenal seeming to be running out of options.
What are your views? Do you think we can get Higuain or Suarez? If we can’t is their another striker we can go after?
