Former Arsenal and France midfielder Emmanuel Petit has warned the club need to get rid of host of the big names and sign established if they want to return to their former glory days.
The former World cup and European cup winner formed a formidable partnership with his countryman Patrick Viera in his three years at Arsenal from 1997 to 2000.
Petit fears for the future of the club following Wednesday night’s champion’s league humiliation in San Siro and claimed the like of Andrei Arshavin, Tomas Rosicky and Theo Walcott were not good enough to wear the famous red and white jersey.
“I ask my self what has become of the team I knew, it was worse than i thought, they haven’t recovered from the departures of Fabregas, Nasri. Petit told Sofoot.com
“It’s a gulf which confirmed weekend after weekend and what is perhaps the most annoying thing is the club won’t do anything this summer to reverse the trend. They don’t want to go back to overspending in the transfer market, and I think they’re right.
“But for two seasons, the level of the team has only gone down.
“The problem is that previously the club compensated for its lack of physical strength with Fabregas. With him, Arsenal were the most attractive team to watch in Europe behind Barcelona.
“There, in the midfield, there isn’t anything now; the defence is constantly under construction. It’s fortunate that Van Persie is up front.

Petit added, the crop of young players at the club haven’t done enough to justify the confidence Wenger has in them and the likes of Arshavin and Rosicky needs to be shown the exit door this summer.
”certain young players haven’t done enough to justify the confidence that Arsene has in them. Walcott – somehow he’s going to have to reach the next stage. It’s been years that he’s been at the same level. Ramsey, against Milan, I got the impression it was his (twin) brother on the pitch. In the way they behave, in their body language, we see they’re not there anymore.
“We shouldn’t hesitate to talk about the end of the cycle. Regardless of age, we have look seriously at certain players right now. You have to so send out a strong signal, you have to say Arshavin and Rosicky: ‘Gentlemen, thank you but good bye and soon”.
The Frenchman concluded by doubting on whether Lille’s Eden Hazard would be a suitable signing for Arsenal, claiming the club need more experience players.
“I like him a lot but what has he done at high level? Petit said. “Has he been good in the champion’s league? “We haven’t seen him. Has he been good for Belgium? He’s sometimes a substitute.
“What’s needed are five or six players of real stature, great experience.
“Players who are 27-30 years old at most, Players with technical qualities, obviously, but also strong character”.
“A group who refuse ti accept defeat, who inspire confidence in the rest of the team.”

Atleast rosicky was outstanding, wit van persie,.
ya mate
I think he doesn’t watch our games
Good talk Mr Petit. Will Wenger and the Board listen, I doubt it. When Wenger had come open to tell the whole world that he has to make between £15m – £20m profit every season. This board can never allow him to buy 5 – 6 quality players. It is a sad story.
hahhaa at least we have people to voice out to the crock board
Petit was right rosicsky form is just 4 a while & he’s nt even strong. Arsenal need 2 sel arshavin, chamark & othas 2 bring in strong attacka, strong attackin midfildas tht can penetrate any strong defens.
